Gov. Judd Gregg today proposed requiring state workers to take unpaid days off and raising business taxes.

He called for state workers making more than $30,000 annually to take five days off before the fiscal year ends June 30. Workers making less would have to take three days of furlough.

The head of the state employees’ union, who had not been consulted, reacted harshly. “Why doesn’t he go up and say, ‘I need $500 out of their savings accounts?’ ” asked Denis Parker, director of the State Employees Assn.
