Villanova sank 10 consecutive free throws in the final 2:04 Monday night and upset No. 19 Georgetown, 65-56, in a Big East Conference game at Philadelphia.

Villanova, 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference, broke a five-game losing streak against Georgetown (10-4, 2-2) that dated to Feb. 1, 1988. The Hoyas trounced Villanova, 83-53, the last time the teams met, on Feb. 24, 1990.

Dikembe Mutombo had 18 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots for Georgetown, making all eight of his shots before fouling out in the final minutes.

Georgetown was again without starting forward Alonzo Mourning, who has missed eight of nine games since straining the arch of his left foot against Duke on Dec. 5.

Marc Dowdell of Villanova made two free throws to break a 53-53 tie with 2:04 left, putting the Wildcats ahead to stay.

Mutombo committed his sixth personal foul 13 seconds later and Arron Bain sank both free throws to give Villanova a four-point lead.

After Charles Harrison hit a free throw for Georgetown with 1:29 left, Greg Woodard hit four consecutive free throws and Calvin Byrd made two more to give Villanova a 63-54 lead with 25 seconds left.

No. 3 Indiana 65, Purdue 62--The Hoosiers got away with playing Eric Anderson and Calbert Cheaney with four fouls most of the second half and escaped a Boilermaker rally for a Big Ten Conference victory at West Lafayette, Ind.

Eric Anderson scored 15 points and Cheaney added 14 for Indiana (15-1, 3-0), which led by 14 points in the first half.

Anderson and Cheaney each picked up their fourth fouls in the first four minutes of the second half and Purdue (10-4, 2-2) outscored Indiana, 10-2, in a five-minute stretch and took its first lead, 49-48, on a basket by freshman Ian Stanback with 11:46 left.

Chuckie White, who scored 17 points, made three points in the next minute to give the Boilermakers a 52-48 lead and brought Cheaney and Anderson off the Indiana bench.

Two baskets apiece by those two and a three-point play by Jamal Meeks gave the Hoosiers a 59-58 lead, and two more baskets by Anderson put Indiana ahead, 63-60, with 1:48 to go. Pat Graham iced the victory with two free throws with 18 seconds left.

The victory was Indiana’s 13th in a row, and its 15-1 start matches its best since 1982-83.

No. 12 Duke 89, Wake Forest 67--Sophomore Thomas Hill scored 22 points and Christian Laettner added 21 as the Blue Devils downed the Demon Deacons in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

Duke (13-3, 3-1) led by 15 points at halftime on the strength of 13 points by Laettner and 16 turnovers by Wake Forest, including five in the last two minutes.

The Demon Deacons (7-5, 2-2) closed to within 67-59 when Randolph Childress hit a three-point shot with 14:40 left, but Hill scored 12 of his points in the second half, helping the Blue Devils pull away.

No. 15 East Tennessee State 96, Citadel 76--Marty Story scored 23 points and the Buccaneers coasted past the Bulldogs in a Southern Conference game at Johnson City, Tenn.

The Buccaneers (13-1, 3-0), who haven’t lost since the second game of the season at Arizona, had a 15-point lead sliced to 67-59 with 10:30 left, but broke the game open with a 24-3 surge.

Aaron Nichols had 16 points for the Citadel (2-9, 0-4).

No. 21 New Mexico State 82, Fresno State 77--The Aggies, behind a career-high 29 points from senior forward Reggie Jordan, overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the Bulldogs at Fresno. Tod Bernard hit a jumper with 22 seconds left to bring Fresno State within two points, 79-77, but Jordan, hitting only 49% of his free throws entering the game, hit three of four in the final 15 seconds. Paul Newman scored 46 points and Tom Davis had 23 to lead Delaware State (10-4) to an 87-79 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Morgan State (0-14, 0-4) at Baltimore. SOUTH

Popeye Jones had 19 points and 14 rebounds to lift Murray State (13-6, 2-0) to a 70-66 victory over Middle Tennessee (10-4, 0-2) in Ohio Valley Conference game at Murfreesboro, Tenn. WEST

Dwight Stewart had 25 points and 14 rebounds as Florida International (3-11) broke a six-game losing streak by defeating U.S. International, 106-94, at Miami. Kevin Bradshaw scored 59 points for the Gulls (1-18), who lost their 16th consecutive game.
