Center to Hold Get-Together for Latino Seniors

Share

To acquaint Latino seniors with services available at the Long Beach Senior Citizen Center, several organizations are hosting a get-together Feb. 3.

The Fiesta de Amistad, or Festival of Friendship, will feature entertainment by folk singer Lalo Guerrero, the Mexicapan Mariachis and Ernie Hernandez and his band.

“We’re just trying to increase the participation of the minority community and we’re starting with the Latinos,” said Nick Apodaca, the center’s community services supervisor. Between 4,000 and 5,000 senior citizens use the center at 1150 E. 4th St., but only a small percentage are Latino, he said.

The social event, which includes dinner, is free to the first 350 Latino seniors who make a reservation by calling 435-7511, Apodaca said. The center offers a number of recreational, social and referral services, including crafts, movies, physical fitness programs and low-cost bus passes.

The fiesta is co-sponsored by the Long Beach Parks and Recreation Department, Family Health Plan Services and a group called Fiesta de Amistad Committee.
