Bomb Near Oil Fields Found to Be Harmless

The discovery of a 750-pound military bomb near oil fields prompted police to evacuate a two-square-mile area for more than seven hours before the device was determined to be harmless, police said Thursday.

The 18-inch U.S. Army bomb was discovered about 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Gaffey Street near Capitol Drive north of San Pedro, Officer Christopher Walter said.

The device was found near fields owned by Unocal Corp., but police had no reason to believe that Unocal was an intended target, Walter said. Officers with the bomb squad went to the scene and tried to X-ray the bomb, but the shell was too thick. An Army demolition team called in from San Diego determined the device had been filled with sand and was harmless, Sgt. Mark Jaurequil said.
