Share

The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce is trying to stir up support in the business community for the Capistrano Unified School District’s claim that it is getting less state money than it should.

Executive Director Mimi Collier has called a meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday at the district headquarters to discuss the matter with local business leaders.

“The chamber’s board of directors has decided that now is the time to pursue solutions and . . . help develop a meaningful plan,” Collier said.

Capistrano Unified--which serves San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Laguna Niguel, Dana Point and part of Mission Viejo--filed suit with 16 other districts from throughout the state last November contending that the state funding process is unfair.

Capistrano Unified received $2,911 per student last year from the state, the lowest amount in Orange County. Los Alamitos Unified received the highest Orange County amount, $3,343 per student. Capistrano Unified wants a system set up to pay school districts equally.
