Police Break Up Cockfighting Ring
San Diego police broke up a cockfighting operation Sunday at an Encanto home.
Five men and a woman were told by officers that they will be mailed felony and misdemeanor warrants changing them with conducting illegal cockfights, being present at a cockfight and using cockfighting paraphernalia.
The raid occurred shortly after noon when officers responded to a tip about several people engaging in gamecock fighting at a home in the 6700 block of Las Lidia Court. A Police Department spokesman said that, when they arrived, officers found about 15 people at the illegal cockfights.
Police then called in officers from the County Animal Regulations Department and the Humane Society. In the back yard of the residence, investigators also found three dead birds, one severely injured bird that had to be destroyed and 3 dozen live birds, some outfitted with razor-sharp spur blades.
