FULLERTON : Transfer Center at College in the Works

Share

To increase the number of students, especially minorities, who go on to four-year colleges and universities, Fullerton College is working to establish an on-campus transfer center.

The facility will consolidate counseling and transfer personnel in the counseling division of the Student Services Building. The center is scheduled to be operating by July.

“A primary focus of the transfer center will be to increase the number of under-represented students who transfer,” said Kathleen Baker, director of school and college relations. Under-represented is a term used by education experts to describe African-American, Latino, American Indian, disabled and other students whose numbers have been historically low among college students.

“Our aim is to ensure that all students desiring to transfer to four-year institutions obtain the tools necessary to navigate the channels leading to baccalaureate degrees,” Baker said.

Currently, the college offers transfer counseling and opportunities for students to meet with officials from various four-year institutions. But Baker plans to add a library of transfer resources, including college catalogues, plus a specialist to assist students in using the material.

The transfer center and its programs are being funded by a $150,000 grant from the chancellor’s office of the 107-campus California Community Colleges.
