From Times Staff and Wire Reports

U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) was listed in excellent condition after 90-minute surgery to treat prostate cancer, a Stanford Medical Center spokesman said. In the second round of treatment, doctors implanted small radioactive rods in Cranston’s prostate so that radiation could directly attack the cancer, said spokesman Mike Goodkind. The rods will be removed in three days. “The doctors are looking very encouraged. They were very pleased with his prospect of having this procedure and the procedure went very well,” Goodkind said. Cranston, 76, has been receiving general radiation treatment five times a week as an outpatient. The Democratic lawmaker plans to recuperate for two to four weeks in the home of a relative in nearby Los Altos.
