The driver of a car was killed and his passenger wounded Tuesday in what police said appeared to be a gang-related drive-by shooting on the Foothill Freeway in Pasadena.

The eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed at 2:10 p.m. from Lake Avenue to San Gabriel Boulevard while investigators combed the area for evidence, such as spent shell casings.

Traffic was backed up for more than a mile before officers found unspecified evidence and reopened the freeway at 3:45 p.m.

Anthony Dwayne Shaw, 25, of Altadena was driving east on the freeway when another car came alongside and a volley of shots were fired from a handgun, Pasadena Police Lt. Van Anthony said. Shaw was wounded several times and his passenger was grazed, Anthony said.

Shaw apparently was able to pull off the freeway at Sierra Madre Boulevard, and stopped in the middle of the off-ramp. The passenger, whose identity was not released, took the wheel and drove to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where Shaw was pronounced dead. The second man was treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Anthony said the shooting did not appear to be random, adding that “it’s possibly gang-connected.”

“We talked to the surviving victim and he has an idea who shot him,” the lieutenant said.

Police said they had made no arrests.
