COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Hustling Colorado Stuns Nebraska, 86-69

Nebraska Coach Danny Nee offered no excuses after his 14th ranked Cornhuskers were beaten by Colorado, 86-69, at Boulder, Colo., in a Big Eight Conference game Tuesday night.

“They just outworked us,” Nee said. “I thought we were OK at halftime, but they shot the ball well and kept working and working.”

Although Steve Wise scored 32 points to lead the Buffaloes, 12-4 overall, 2-1 in the conference, Colorado Coach Joe Harrington felt the difference was the play of Billy Law, a junior college transfer who scored 16 points and had six assists.

He attributed the victory to a defense that smothered the Cornhuskers in a decisive, seven-minute 17-4 surge in the second half. Nebraska also shot 29% in the second half.

Nebraska (16-2, 2-1) was led by Eric Piatkowski with 16 points and Rich King with 12.

Tennessee 92, No. 16 LSU 89--Allan Houston and Lang Wiseman each scored 32 points as the Volunteers (8-10, 2-5) upset Louisiana State (12-4. 5-2) in a Southeastern Conference game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit for a 58-57 lead on Houston’s three-point basket four minutes into the half.

Mike Hanson scored 31 points and Shaquille O’Neal added 18 points for LSU.

No. 10 St. John’s 65, No. 19 Connecticut 62--Robert Werdann scored 19 points and Malik Sealy added 18 at New York as the Redmen (14-2, 5-2) moved into a tie with Syracuse for first place in the Big East. It was the fourth loss in a row for the Huskies (12-5, 3-4).

St. John’s led, 48-38, with 6:10 to play, but Sealy, who had scored 35 points in each of his past two games, picked up his fifth foul 19 seconds later and Connecticut went on an 8-2 run to get within four points with 4:20 left. REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS EAST

Marc Dowdell scored a career-high 18 points to lead Villanova (10-7, 3-3) to a 72-59 Big East victory over slumping Boston College (9-9, 1-5) at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Chris Walker added 15 points, including four during a decisive surge in the second half. . . . Anthony Avent scored 21 points, including the game-deciding basket as Seton Hall (12-4) ended St. Peter’s (10-3) four-game winning streak with a 67-62 victory at East Rutherford, N.J. The teams played to a 34-34 halftime tie, but Avent and Oliver Taylor each scored six points in a 20-6 spurt that allowed Seton Hall to open a 14 point lead with 6:47 to play.

Junior Mik Kilgore’s season-high 25 points helped Temple (11-4, 5-1) beat city rival St. Joseph’s (5-11, 2-7), 73-56, in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Philadelphia. It was Temple’s 11th win in a row over the Hawks. MIDWEST

Doug Smith scored 25 of his 33 points in the second half, becoming Missouri’s No. 2 career scorer, as the Tigers beat Alaska-Fairbanks, 125-72, at Columbia, Mo. Smith, with 1,848 points, moved past Steve Stipanovich (1,836) and trails only Derrick Chievous (2,580). Aaron Johnson led the Nanooks (5-14) with 18 points. . . . Keith Hughes scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half when Rutgers (10-6) held Notre Dame (7-10) without a field goal for nearly seven minutes and beat the Irish, 62-52, at South Bend, Ind. Locksley Collie scored 26 points, including the final 12 for Texas (11-5, 5-1) in an 83-65 victory over Texas Tech (5-14, 2-5) in a Southwest Conference game at Lubbock, Tex. Courtney Jeans added 22 points for the Longhorns. . . . Matt Roe scored 10 of his 19 points during the decisive first half, and Maryland (10-7), using two 12-0 runs, pulled away from Boston University (6-10) for an 85-69 win at College Park, Md. Cedric Lewis had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for the Terrapins, who led by as many as 30 points. WEST
