With war raging in the Persian Gulf, many home video renters are, more than ever, in the mood for a good laugh. Critics didn’t find many in “My Blue Heaven”--a film about the witness-protection program starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis--but consumers are renting it anyway. In its third week on the Billboard magazine rental chart, “My Blue Heaven” is flying high, jumping from No. 11 to No. 5. “The Adventures of Ford Fairlane,” starring Andrew Dice Clay, thus far has been a more popular rental than expected, cruising up to No. 10 in its second week on the chart. Both “Godfather” movies are still doing surprisingly well on the rental chart, with the original leaping from No. 31 to No. 23 and “Part II” moving from No. 39 to No. 25.

* Critics charged that “Young Guns II” was inferior to the original, which many contended wasn’t very good in the first place. But “II” did respectable business at the box office, taking in more than $40 million, and should repeat the rental success of the original, which was a huge video hit. “II” premiered low, at No. 39, on the rental chart, but should blast its way into the Top 10 in the next two weeks.
