Sean Rooks banked in a basket over a sprawling Adam Keefe with one second left to give fifth-ranked Arizona a 78-76 victory at Stanford Thursday night.

Arizona, 16-2 overall and 5-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference, won a seesaw battle with the Cardinal (10-7, 3-4).

Stanford thought it had tied the game with no time left after Rooks’ basket. Kenny Hicks made a three-point attempt before the buzzer, and Deshon Wingate tipped it in. But the officials disallowed Wingate’s attempt as offensive basket interference.

Rooks’ winning shot came off a play designed for the team’s top scorer, Chris Mills. Keefe, who led all scorers with 29, was guarding Rooks closely but slipped on a wet spot as Rooks made the winning basket.

Mills finished with 18 points to lead Arizona. Rooks had 10.

Stanford led, 76-72, with 2:25 left after a lay-in by Andrew Vlahov. But baskets by Brian Williams (who scored 13 points) and Matt Muehlebach tied it, 76-76, with 1:55 left.

Vlahov, who had 15 points, caused a turnover that gave Stanford possession with 40 seconds left, but the Cardinal’s John Patrick was whistled for an offensive foul eight seconds later, setting up the winning shot.

Arizona had to rally to tie, 40-40, at halftime.

The Wildcats took a 25-17 lead after hitting eight field goals in a row. But Stanford battled back, using a 14-1 scoring run, to take a 31-26 lead with 5:53 left in the half.

California 76, Arizona State 65--Sean Harrell and Brian Hendrick each scored 17 points to lead the Golden Bears at Berkeley.

Cal (7-9 overall, 3-4 in the Pac-10) made 32 of 37 free throws. The Sun Devils were six of nine. Twenty-one of Cal’s final 27 points came at the line, but Arizona State didn’t shoot a free throw in the second half until 3:56 remained.

Jamal Faulkner scored 23 points for Arizona State (11-5, 2-4).
