A Vista woman suspected of killing her adopted 17-month-old son, who had Down’s syndrome, was ordered Friday to stand trial for murder.

Cherie Mildred Adams, 34, was also bound over to Superior Court on a felony child-abuse charge after a preliminary hearing.

San Diego Municipal Judge Rafael Arreola scheduled an arraignment and trial-setting appearance for Feb. 8.

The boy, Bryan Adams, suffered head injuries on Nov. 27. Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics were called to the Adams apartment after the mother dialed 911 and told a dispatcher that her son was not breathing.

A pathologist, John Eisele, testified Thursday and Friday that the injuries did not appear to be accidental. The boy died from a blow by a blunt instrument, he said.

Adams has said she found the boy face down in his room, and he was not breathing.

Her husband, James Adams, 28, was stationed in Honolulu with the Navy when the child was injured.

Her attorney, William Rafael, asked that her $250,000 bail be lowered, but the judge denied the request, and she remains in custody.
