Loyola Loses in Overtime, 103-101

Allen Caveness and Thurman Watson each scored six points in overtime to lead St. Mary’s to a 103-101 West Coast Conference victory over Loyola Marymount, which is off to its worst conference start in 12 years.

The Lions are 6-13 overall and 0-5 in the WCC. They had an 0-8 conference start in 1978-79.

Caveness paced St. Mary’s (7-12, 3-3) with 28 points.

Terrell Lowery led the Lions with 29 points and Richard Petruska added 24.

With slightly less than a minute left in regulation, Caveness scored to give St. Mary’s an 89-84 lead. But Ross Richardson made a three-pointer and Petruska scored with two seconds remaining to tie the score, 89-89.

Caveness scored St. Mary’s first four points in overtime, and Watson scored the next four to give the Gaels a 97-95 lead. Martell Bland, who could have sealed the victory with two free throws in regulation, made two free throws in overtime to give St. Mary’s a 99-95 lead.
