In response to “Declining Expectations,” Jack Mathews’ Jan. 13 commentary on “The Godfather Part III” and other films:

Why is it that every critic feels compelled to say that his expectations were not met and he felt “let down” by a filmmaker because a movie wasn’t another “Citizen Kane”?

When will critics learn that non-perfection doesn’t mean mediocre? “Godfather III” is a great film. Put it up against the several hundreds of films made in the past few years and I am sure that it would be in the top 10%.

Why not discuss the beauty, score and acting, instead of nit-picking at non-critical roles?

Commentaries such as Mathews’ only discourage filmmakers from attempting to make great films.
