COLLEGE BASKETBALL / PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Cal Fights Its Way to Upset of No. 5 Arizona, 85-78

Billy Dreher scored 17 of his career-high 23 points in the second half Saturday to lead California to a fight-interrupted, 85-78 upset over fifth-ranked Arizona at Berkeley.

Cal (8-9 overall, 4-4 in the Pac-10) beat Arizona (16-3, 5-2) for the first time in nine games.

With the score tied, 56-56, midway through the second half, Cal went on a 10-2 run, capped by Bill Elleby’s three-pointer that made it 66-58 with 6:20 left.

The Wildcats closed to 79-76 on Chris Mills’ three-point basket with 55 seconds left, but Cal hit its free throws down the stretch to rebuild its lead.

Arizona played the final part of the game without forward Wayne Womack. With 5:33 left in the game, Cal’s Brian Hendrick and Womack began throwing elbows under the basket. A fight broke out but the players were quickly separated. Womack then began fighting with Cal guard Ryan Drew.

Womack and Drew were ejected. They will be forced to sit out their next games under new Pac-10 rules on fighting. Another fighting violation for either player and he will be suspended for the rest of the season.

Hendrick scored 17 points for Cal. Mills had 20 for Arizona.

Washington 50, Washington State 48--Doug Meekins scored 18 points, including two free throws with four seconds left to lift the Huskies to victory at Pullman, Wash.

Tyrone Maxey of Washington State missed a shot from the top of the key as time expired.

Washington State (12-5, 4-3) scored the first seven points before Meekins broke the ice for the Huskies (12-5, 3-4) 3 1/2 minutes into the game. The Cougars held a 24-19 lead at halftime.

The Huskies went on a 9-2 run in the second half when the Cougars failed to get a basket for more than five minutes.

Washington State tied the score, 48-48, on Rob Corkrum’s dunk with 20 seconds left.
