Airbus Subsidies May Be Slashed: European Community officials said they are ready to cut subsidies to aircraft manufacturer Airbus Industrie in an effort to defuse a four-year trade dispute with the United States. They said the EC proposes to eliminate production subsidies and cut development subsidies by 45%. The United States maintains that the French, British, German and Spanish governments’ subsidies allow Airbus to undercut U.S. aircraft manufacturers Boeing Co. and McDonnell Douglas Corp. The Europeans counter that U.S. manufacturers receive billions of dollars in aid through defense and research contracts.
