FILLMORE : City, School Leaders Plan Joint Meeting

Share

The City Council and the Fillmore Unified School District Board of Trustees will hold a joint meeting tonight to discuss a variety of mutual concerns. Scheduled for 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall on Sespe Avenue, the meeting is the first joint session since July, 1990.

The agenda includes a report on construction of a middle school, which school district officials say is on schedule, and an update on a pedestrian crossing that will connect the new campus to the existing junior high.

There will be suggestions for school board members to save money by sharing the high school pool and other school facilities with city recreation programs, an issue recently discussed by board members.

The school board in turn will hear projections for commercial, industrial and residential development in Fillmore and discuss the new Economic Development Committee appointed by the City Council. There will also be a report on the citywide recycling program.

A proposal to freeze state vehicle registration fees at last year’s values may receive support from both organizations. City officials said the legislation would negate fee reductions that car owners receive as their vehicles depreciate.

The resultant increase in revenue would benefit counties, which might pass the savings on to cities, officials said. This could cancel Ventura County government demands that cities pay to book criminals into County Jail, and that school districts pay for property tax collection.

The next joint meeting for school and city representatives is scheduled for April 30.
