C. Stewart Marsh: Retired College Dean

C. Stewart Marsh, a retired Los Angeles Valley College dean and psychology professor, has died at a South Pasadena hospital. He was 82.

A longtime resident of Pasadena, Marsh died Saturday of complications of nerve damage, said his wife, Erma Marsh.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., he earned a doctorate in psychology from Yale University and served in the Army during World War II, achieving the rank of major. In 1950, he became a psychology professor at Los Angeles Valley College, later becoming dean of the evening division and retired in 1970 as dean of instruction, then the second-ranking post in the college administration.

Marsh, who wrote more than 100 published articles for various journals and magazines, was a member of the American Psychological Assn., Friends of the Huntington Library, Pasadena Historical Society, Los Angeles County Arboretum, Los Angeles County Natural Historical Museum, Greater Los Angeles Zoo Assn., the Republican Club in Pasadena and the Administrators Assn. of the Los Angeles Community College District.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years; son Jack Marsh of Sacramento; sister Pauline Foy of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren.

Services will be private. Forest Lawn Mortuary of Hollywood Hills is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Marsh’s name to the Stewart Marsh Scholarship Fund at Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave., Van Nuys 91401.
