Santa Monica : Cigarette Machines Face Ban
Cigarette vending machines may go up in smoke soon in Santa Monica, as the City Council took the first step on Tuesday toward banning them.
The council voted unanimously this week to have City Atty. Robert M. Myers draft an ordinance that would outlaw the vending machines to prevent minors from easily obtaining cigarettes.
An earlier ordinance, not yet approved, would have allowed the machines only in bars. Councilman Herb Katz, who proposed the more stringent ban, said the machines are alluring to minors even when hidden inside the doors of local pubs.
