Trevathan, Wellman Invited to NFL Scouting Combine

Mike Trevathan and Gary Wellman, wide receivers who played against each other in high school, have been invited to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis from Feb. 6-11.

Trevathan, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound Thousand Oaks High product, was a first-team Division I-AA All-American last fall after making 65 receptions for the University of Montana. He is the school’s all-time leading receiver. Wellman, who played at Westlake High before starring at USC, was a first-team All-Pac-10 selection.

The wide receivers’ portion of the combine is Feb. 9-11. Running back Albert Fann of Cal State Northridge will be among the running backs tested from Feb. 6-8.

Derik Vett of Cal State Northridge has been named to the 1990 NCAA Division I Academic All-American cross-country team.

Vett, a fifth-year senior from Buena High, was the Matadors’ No. 1 runner last fall, placing 15th in the District VIII championships in Fresno.

A graphics design major with a 3.5 grade-point average, Vett was one of 16 runners to be named.

Dani Elton, a Cal Lutheran forward, was named the NAIA District 3 women’s basketball player of the week.

She broke her career high for scoring twice last week, scoring 25 points against Occidental on Tuesday and 29 against Azusa Pacific on Thursday. Elton, a 5-7 senior from Simi Valley High, broke a school record for free throws and attempts Thursday, making 21 of 23. She also had a career-best nine assists against Occidental.

Amy Stone, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter for the Thousand Oaks High girls’ volleyball team, orally committed to play volleyball at Colorado State next season.

Deena Drossin of Agoura High will run in the U. S. Junior (age 14-19) World cross-country trials in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday.

The top six finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races with U. S. citizenship will qualify for the national team that will compete in the World Junior cross-country championships in Antwerp, Belgium, on March 24. Drossin, who has won three State Division I cross-country titles for Agoura, placed third in last year’s junior trials.
