Purple Rose of Chelsea: Actor Jeff Daniels said he didn’t want to be known as a snobbish movie star “with the big house up on the hill,” so he will open a community theater in his small hometown of Chelsea, Mich. Daniels, 35, grew up in Chelsea, which is about 40 miles west of Detroit and has a population of about 4,000, and he owns a house there. He’ll open the Purple Rose Theatre on Thursday with a play called “Blush at Nothing.” Said Daniels: “I didn’t want to be, ‘Oh, there’s the millionaire movie star.’ I thought I could get something done. I can teach. I can say, ‘Let me tell you what Meryl Streep said.’ ” Daniels, whose credits include “Arachnophobia,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Purple Rose of Cairo,” is uncertain when he may star on his own stage.
