From Times Staff and Wire Reports

As many as 400 people may have been killed in Afghanistan during last week’s earthquake, aid workers in Pakistan said. That could bring to more than 700 the number of people killed in the quake, which was felt from Soviet Central Asia to India on Friday. In Pakistan, officials said more than 300 people had died and hundreds more were injured. But that figure was expected to rise as officials receive reports from remote mountain villages hardest hit by the quake. Rescue efforts are being hindered by heavy snow. The temblor was one of the most powerful in years, rocking the region for at least one minute, seismologists said. Thousands of mud houses collapsed, many on sleeping residents.
