TENNIS ROUNDUP : Uwe-Steeb Beats Chang, 6-1, 7-5

Michael Chang will have plenty of time to see the sights on his first visit to Milan.

Chang, seeded fourth, was defeated by Carl Uwe-Steeb of Germany, 6-1, 7-5, in 83 minutes Tuesday night in the first round of the Milan Indoor tournament.

In other first-round action, Anders Jarryd of Sweden breezed past Roberto Raffa of Italy, 6-0, 6-1; No. 8 Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union struggled past Cedric Pioline of France, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4; Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia defeated Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 3 Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union downed Sebastian Soresini, 6-3, 6-3.

Kristin Godridge of Australia upset third-seeded Mercedes Paz of Argentina, 6-2, 7-5, in the opening round of the Fernleaf tournament at Wellington, New Zealand.

In another upset, Andrea Strnadova of Czechoslovakia overcame fifth-seeded Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Top-seeded Leila Meshki of the Soviet Union advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nicole Pratt of Australia, while second-seeded 2 Wiltrud Probst of Germany beat Julie Richardson of New Zealand, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
