Compton : Proposed Trash Rate Hike Fails in Split Council Vote
- Share via
A proposed rate increase that would have added 56 cents a month to the cost of residential rubbish collection was turned down Tuesday night by the Compton City Council. The current rate is $11.32 a month.
The proposed increase failed on a 2-2 vote with council members Maxcy D. Filer and Patricia A. Moore voting against it. Those supporting it were Councilwomen Bernice Woods and Jane Robbins.
Since October, when Mayor Walter R. Tucker died of cancer, there have been only four council votes. The office of mayor will be filled at a special election in April.
The city’s rubbish contractor, Murcole Inc. of Compton, requested the rate hike and the city manager’s staff recommended that the council agree to it.
