Third-seeded Brad Gilbert advanced to the quarterfinals of the Volvo-San Francisco tennis tournament Wednesday night with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alexander Mronz of Germany.

Top-seeded Andre Agassi later turned back Udo Riglewski, another hard-serving German, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Agassi, the defending champion, was able to handle his opponents’ serves, recorded at up to 120 m.p.h., over the final two sets, and the German hurt himself with several crucial forehand errors.

Kevin Curren and Dan Goldie also reached the quarterfinals. Curren defeated 19-year-old Luis Herrera of Mexico, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and Goldie upset fifth-seeded Tim Mayotte, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
