With the Sunset League boys’ basketball championship on the line, Mustapha Abdi stepped to the free-throw line Friday night with the score tied at 69 and eight seconds left in regulation.

And he missed.

But Abdi more than made up for it, scoring eight of his career-high 46 points in overtime as Huntington Beach clinched a three-way tie for the league title with an 82-72 victory over Ocean View High School Friday night at Huntington Beach.

The victory gave Huntington Beach (17-7, 9-3 in league) a share of the league championship for the second time in three years.

The Oilers finished tied with Edison and Marina. They shared the 1989 championship with Ocean View and Edison.

Ocean View (13-11, 7-5) had a chance to spoil Huntington Beach’s title hopes Friday night.

After Abdi’s one-and-one free-throw attempt bounced off the front of the rim, Ocean View’s Marcel TenBerge grabbed the rebound. Jim Harris then drove up-court, but his layup rolled off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Abdi opened the overtime with a short jumper, then followed his own miss with 1 minute 40 seconds left.

After an Ocean View turnover, sophomore guard Bryan Chang hit a three-pointer with 1 minute 30 seconds left to push Huntington Beach’s lead to 76-71.

Huntington Beach Coach Roy Miller said Chang wasn’t supposed to take the shot.

“I thought we were in a delay game then,” Miller said, laughing.

Harris then missed a three-pointer, and Abdi made all four of his free-throw attempts in the final 1:10 as Huntington Beach held on.

It was the second time this season Huntington Beach defeated Ocean View in overtime. Abdi had 36 points as the Oilers beat the Hawks, 76-74, in overtime two weeks ago.

Miller didn’t want to play overtime again, but he didn’t fault Abdi for missing the free throw that could have won it in regulation.

“Hey, Mustapha can’t be Superman all the time,” Miller said. “But he’s pretty close to it.”

Abdi controlled the game early, scoring all of Huntington Beach’s 18 first-quarter points. He had 22 at halftime with the score tied, 29-29.

Abdi hit only six of 17 shots in the first half, including one of nine in the second quarter. At halftime, Miller decided to spread the shooting around.

“We wanted to give Mustapha a little bit of a breather and get more people involved in the second half,” Miller said.

Chang, who fouled out with no points in the first Ocean View game, responded with eight of his 15 points in a third-quarter run. Huntington Beach led, 54-47, at the end of the third quarter.

But Ocean View chipped away at the lead in the final five minutes. TenBerge scored eight points in the final 4:44, including two free throws with nine seconds left that tied it at 69-69.

TenBerge scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Harris added 10 points for Ocean View. Abdi had 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for Huntington Beach.
