Best known as the inspiration for the 1937 “A Star Is Born,” this 1932 film directed by George Cukor (who in turn directed the 1954 musical remake of “A Star Is Born”) can easily stand on its own considerable merits. Constance Bennett stars as a Brown Derby waitress discovered by a top-flight director (Lowell Sherman) whose career declines as Bennett’s soars.

Love Me Tonight (AMC Monday at 4 p.m., again at 9:30 p.m.) The opening sequence of this exquisite 1932 Rouben Mamoulian film, regarded as the first screen musical in which songs and dramatic action are truly integrated, is famous. Sounds and images of Paris at dawn give way to introducing tailor Maurice Chevalier, who commences singing Rodgers and Hart’s “Isn’t It Romantic?”

Voices of Sarafina! (Channel 28 Friday at 10 p.m.) is Nigel Noble’s touching 1988 backstage and onstage documentary, illustrating the thoughts and experiences of the formidable young performers of “Sarafina!,” the stage musical dramatizing the student uprising in Soweto in 1967 that has yet to play Los Angeles (and whose opening was recently canceled).
