Short Takes : Sinead O’Conner Wants to Retire

DUBLIN, Ireland — Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, who has snubbed pop awards and refused to have the U.S. national anthem played at her concerts, may retire from the music business.
The shaven-headed rock star, who turned down music awards in Britain and Ireland and has refused to be considered for the prestigious U.S. Grammy awards, said: “I don’t like being famous. I don’t like the effect it is having on my life.”
O’Connor, 23, told Irish radio in a weekend interview that she was seriously considering retirement, adding: “I want to take many years off.”
O’Connor caused a furor in the United States last year and a stinging rebuke from Frank Sinatra when she banned the playing of the U.S. national anthem at one of her concerts.
