A transient who was given shelter by a man was charged in Los Angeles on Monday with felony child stealing for allegedly taking her benefactor’s 1-year-old son and leaving him in the care of another man. Michelle Olivier, 38, was arrested Friday when she visited a Department of Social Services office and was held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Olivier could be sentenced to a maximum prison term of four years if convicted of the single count of child stealing. Olivier, who had been staying with Ernest Dickerson, 42, asked him if she could take his son with her for a visit to the welfare office Feb. 1, police said. Dickerson agreed, but Olivier never returned or called the father, police said.

The next day, Olivier took the baby to the home of Roscoe Scally, who had raised 12 children, and asked him to baby-sit “her child” for a couple of hours. She left and never returned, police said. The baby was found unharmed last Wednesday.
