A 911 operator earned nearly $100,000 to become the highest-paid city employee last year because the city’s emergency system has chronic staffing problems.

The operator, whom the city declined to identify, routinely worked 90-hour weeks.

He earned $94,869, putting in 2,700 hours of overtime at a rate 50% above his regular pay, a city official said.

The operator’s base salary is $30,600, plus shift differentials and additional pay for training new employees. By comparison, Mayor Bud Clark makes $72,592 a year and Police Chief Tom Potter is paid $75,546. Neither is eligible for overtime pay.
