P.M. BRIEFING : Sun-Times, Guild Avert Layoffs
Chicago Sun-Times management and the Newspaper Guild have agreed on a plan that will prevent newsroom layoffs, the paper reported today.
Under the agreement, union members will voluntarily work four-day weeks or take unpaid days off to eliminate about 651 days from the payroll over the next 18 months, the report said.
Those savings, along with union members’ planned resignations, retirements and unpaid leaves of absence, were enough to avoid scheduled cuts of six to 12 jobs in the newsroom, the newspaper said.
Sun-Times managers also have agreed to temporary pay cuts. Top editors and executives will give up 2 1/2 to 5 days pay, without the days off, between now and the end of the fiscal year on June 30. President Sam McKeel and all corporate officers will give up one week’s pay, said Sun-Times spokesman Charles Champion.
