Downey : 68.5 Acres May Be Added to Redevelopment District

Share

The Downey City Council has moved a step closer to expanding its redevelopment district by 68.5 acres by sending its proposal to Los Angeles County officials for review. City planners would like to expand the district to help Downey Community Hospital and a Ford dealership to expand, and to create an auto mall on the city’s east side.

One of the proposed areas covers 14.3 acres that extend north from the hospital on Brookshire Avenue, across Margaret Street and to nearby railroad tracks. The second proposed area covers 38.8 acres just south of where the Santa Ana and San Gabriel River freeways cross. Redevelopment officials are requesting condemnation powers in the area.

The third area covers 15.4 acres on three corners of the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and Gallatin Road in the northern part of the city. Redevelopment officials are requesting condemnation powers in this area as well.

The City Council will hold public hearings on the proposed redevelopment areas in April or May, a city official said.
