A man who used his 1-year-old daughter as a shield as he jumped with her off the roof of a Long Beach apartment building was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years in state prison.

Julian Zamorano, 32, pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon, kidnaping, possession of cocaine, burglary, spousal abuse and drunken driving and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Philip Hickok.

Police said Zamorano broke into his estranged wife’s apartment in Long Beach last Christmas, beat her and took his daughter at gunpoint as police arrived, answering a call for help.

The officers watched as Zamorano walked out of the apartment building, holding a handgun to his daughter’s head, and climbed to the roof. He then jumped and ran a short distance before he was captured, police said. The toddler was found lying unhurt on the sidewalk, police said.
