Oceanside police arrested a man late Thursday in connection with the death of a 19-month-old girl.

Marc Oliver, 20, who lived with Amber Winsley and her mother, LaShawn Winsley, was arrested on suspicion of murder, Oceanside police Officer Bob Burke said Friday.

The county medical examiner’s office determined that the toddler died of head injuries earlier this week.

Burke said LaShawn Winsley called 911 shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday because the toddler was not breathing.

When officers and paramedics arrived at the home in the 400 block of Edgehill Lane they pronounced the child dead, Burke said.

Police believe Amber was injured sometime between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday, while she was left alone with Oliver.

LaShawn Winsley told police her daughter was in good health when she left, and that when she returned, she was told the child was already in bed.

“At about 11 a.m. on Tuesday she checked the baby and found that she was not breathing and made the call,” Burke said. “She stated (the toddler) fell off the changing table.”

Burke said LaShawn Winsley was not a suspect in the case and that no charges would be brought against her.
