Jordan’s Hussein

Our government must be very careful in its dealings with King Hussein of Jordan. When the Persian Gulf War is over and there is a need for a new government in Iraq to provide a buffer between Iran and Syria, the king stands out as the one to succeed his cousin, King Faisal II, who was assassinated in 1958 during an Iraqi revolutionary coup.

King Hussein’s lineage goes back to the Prophet Mohammed. This, plus his new-found popularity with the people of the area, makes him a logical choice to assume the role of unifier of the Hashemite/Sunni Muslim Kingdom of Greater Mesopotamia.
