THE WAR’S IMPACT

The Sound of Music: Israel’s cultural life continues to return to a semblance of normalcy, and after more than a month of forced vacation due to the Gulf War, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra will resume concert performances Wednesday in Tel Aviv. Music Director for Life Zubin Mehta will conduct a program of Brahms and Mozart, and violinist Isaac Stern will be the soloist. Civil defense rules limiting the size of public gatherings will keep audiences small and all concerts will be held during the afternoon. Mehta’s visit had been planned before the war and he will fulfill conducting engagements until March 10. Stern decided to go to Tel Aviv after learning that the orchestra would be able to resume performing. He arrived Monday for a week.
