Despite Pete Rose's ban from the Hall of Fame, coach GARY SHELTON says "Charlie Hustle" is still a good role model for kids. Shelton's Cypress Little League Allstars were the No. 2 team in the world in 1990. Shelton told The Times:

I asked my 13-year-old son and other kids 12, 13 and 14, “What do you think of Pete Rose being banned from the Hall of Fame?” They said he was dumb to do what he did but still should have been in the Hall of Fame.

The kids I talked to were able to make the distinction between Rose as a ball player and Rose’s private life. Younger kids could care less about Rose because they have other heroes. Older kids who have Rose as a hero can decide for themselves. They can differentiate whether Pete Rose is good, bad or indifferent.
