A robbery suspect accidentally shot himself in the groin early Monday after a convenience store holdup in which several cartons of cigarettes were taken, police said.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, apparently shot himself as he put his gun into his waistband, Sgt. Geoff Spalding said. Police found the wounded man being carried by two friends about 3 a.m. Monday near the scene of the holdup at the 7-Eleven store at Commonwealth Avenue and Gilbert Street.

Spalding said the three were arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault. Thirteen other people were also arrested on aggravated assault charges in connection with the robbery after police raided a nearby hotel room where a party was in progress. Spalding said the three men who allegedly held up the convenience store had been at the party.
