A group of kimono-clad second-graders will perform a traditional Japanese coal miners dance and sing a Japanese folk song today as part of the Ventura Unified School District’s open house at the Buenaventura Mall, Loma Vista School teacher Sharon Tatsch said.

“Each movement signifies what they used to do when they were mining coal,” Tatsch said.

Participants from the district’s 25 elementary and secondary schools and its adult and continuing education programs will perform on a stage near the mall’s food court, district spokeswoman Pam Cook said. Informational tables will be set up during the third annual event today through Saturday, Cook said.

Students from each school will be bused to and from the mall for their performances during school hours, with some groups performing more than once during the three-day period. The Japanese dancers from Loma Vista will perform at 10 a.m. and again at 4 p.m.

A table will be set up for each school. The adult education program will have information about its offerings.

The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
