ORANGE : Council Approves Ban on Fireworks
The City Council adopted a complete ban on fireworks this week, formalizing a measure that voters approved on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The new ordinance, which goes into effect in 30 days, makes illegal the use, sale and manufacture of all fireworks. The ordinance repeals two sections of the city code that allowed the use and sale of state-approved “safe and sane” fireworks.
The ban follows more than a decade of public debate on whether to impose a total ban on fireworks.
Schools, churches and other nonprofit groups argued that small fireworks were irreplaceable as fund-raisers. Patriotic clubs claimed that fireworks were essential for Fourth of July celebrations and other commemorations. But the city’s Fire Department joined fireworks opponents in supporting the ban.
In November, residents approved the fireworks prohibition measure by fewer than 500 votes.
