Times Names Klein President of Valley and Ventura Editions

Jeffrey S. Klein has been named president of the Los Angeles Times San Fernando Valley and Ventura County editions, David Laventhol, Times publisher and chief executive officer, announced. Klein is currently assistant to the publisher.

Klein will replace Jeffrey S. Hall, who has been named special assistant to Richard T. Schlosberg III, group vice president, newspapers, for The Times’ parent company, Times Mirror Co.

“Jeff Hall has made an important contribution to The Times as the first president of the Valley/Ventura editions,” Laventhol said. “I am confident that Jeff Klein will be a strong successor in this crucial competitive area.”

Klein will direct all business operations of the Valley and Ventura County editions and will report to Lawrence M. Higby, senior vice president, consumer marketing. Also, he will continue to supervise The Times’ public relations activities in the immediate future and in that capacity will report directly to Steven L. Isenberg, executive vice president, marketing.

Klein, an attorney, writes the weekly consumer law column, Legal View, that appears Thursdays in View.

Klein, 37, joined the company in 1983 as a lawyer specializing in First Amendment issues. He became assistant to the president of Times Mirror in 1987 and was named assistant to the publisher at The Times in 1989. Before joining The Times, Klein practiced law in the entertainment industry.

Klein was raised in Woodland Hills, where he attended local public schools. He received his bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude , from Claremont McKenna College. He also has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and a law degree from Stanford University.

Klein lives in the Valley with his wife, Karyn, and their two children.

Hall, 39, joined The Times in 1988 as vice president, marketing services, and was named Valley president in August, 1989. He previously was vice president, marketing, at the Kansas City Star for five years and a White House Fellow in 1987-89. Hall received his bachelor of arts degree in communication from Stanford and his MBA from Harvard University.
