OXNARD : City May Appeal INS Office Closure
The Oxnard City Council, acting on a recommendation by City Manager Vern Hazen, will consider Tuesday appealing a decision by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to shut down its branch office in Oxnard.
“If this office is closed, a lot of people up and along the coast will have to travel to either Los Angeles and San Jose to do their business,” said Jim Faulconer, the city’s community services director.
“We’ve seen the numbers of people this office serves, and I can’t conceive of anybody wanting to see it closed,” he said.
The INS announced last week that its Oxnard office would close April 19 because its legalization program had run out of money.
The office was opened in 1988 to help illegal aliens in the area make the legal transition to permanent residency.
