NHL ROUNDUP : Hull, Oates Storm Back for Blues, Beat Blackhawks, 3-1

The St. Louis Blues’ Brett Hull and Adam Oates made amends for their flop Sunday night.

Hull scored his 69th goal and Oates had two assists Tuesday night at St. Louis to lead the Blues and rookie goaltender Pat Jablonski to a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

The victory restored the Blues, who have the best record in the NHL, to a three-point lead over the Blackhawks in the Norris Division.

During a 9-2 victory Sunday at Chicago, the Blackhawks held Hull and Oates scoreless and cut the division lead to a point.

Jablonski was pressed into service because of an injury to Curtis Joseph. Jablonski’s previous NHL record was 0-3-0 and he had a goals-against average of 4.90.

But Jablonski stopped 33 shots, giving up a goal to Dirk Graham on a deflection in the second period.

Hull had scored in nine games in a row before the streak ended Sunday, and Oates had a point in 13 consecutive games. Although he has played in only 45 games, Oates, with 70 assists, is second to the Kings’ Wayne Gretzky.

Winnipeg 5, Hartford 4--Ed Olczyk scored his 200th NHL goal and added an assist at Winnipeg to lead the Jets.

The Jets, beaten twice by the Smythe Division-leading Kings during the weekend, pulled four points ahead of Vancouver in the for the division’s final playoff spot.

Minnesota 2, Philadelphia 2--The Flyers appeared to have a victory at Bloomington, Minn., when the defense collapsed.

Neal Broten went in on a breakaway with 69 seconds left in regulation and beat goalie Ken Wregget to give the North Stars the tie.

New York Islanders 1, Buffalo 1--The Islanders missed a victory at Uniondale, N.Y., when Dale Hawerchuk scored on a power play with 49 seconds left in regulation to give the Sabres the tie.

It was announced before the game that the Islanders, who won four consecutive Stanley Cups in the early 1980s, are for sale.
