COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Master’s Beaten in Playoff Opener

Bryan Moore’s short jump hook dropped through the basket at the buzzer to give visiting Southern California College a 75-73 victory over The Master’s on Tuesday in a first-round game of the NAIA District 3 men’s basketball playoffs.

Fourth-seeded Master’s had tied the score, 73-73, with 34 seconds remaining when Jason Webster scored two of his season-high 25 points. Fifth-seeded Southern California held the ball on the ensuing possession to set up Moore’s game-winning shot.

Master’s led, 41-34, at halftime, and the seven-point margin was the largest either team held.

Webster made 11 of 17 field-goal attempts and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. David Humphreys came off the bench to make all four of his field-goal attempts--including three three-point baskets--and score 12 points for Master’s. Tom Bruner added 11.

Jeff Bickmore, Southern California’s 6-foot-7 center, led all scorers with 35 points. Moore scored 15.

Master’s (19-11) posted its best record this season and came up just short of the school’s first 20-victory season. Southern California (24-7) will play Biola on Saturday at Whittier College in the district semifinals. BASEBALL

Mission 11, Valley 2--Mission’s Eddie Chavez (2-1) struck out eight and allowed only one earned run in his first complete game of the season in a nonconference game at Valley, both teams’ home field.

Will Molina, Gabe Chavez, John Langley and Brandon Hedding all had triples for Mission (8-9), Roy Lozano, Lazaro Campos and Gabe Chavez each had three hits.

Ventura 10, Cerritos 6--Ventura scored six runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 6-4 deficit in the nonconference game at home. Dan Mabsen, Kasha Clemons and Mitch King each had two hits for Ventura (13-2), which had not defeated Cerritos since 1969.

Pierce 5, East L.A. 1--Three Pierce pitchers combined to limit East L.A. (14-5) to seven hits in a nonconference game at Pierce.

In his first start of the season, Pierce’s Chris Brown threw four shutout innings. Kurt Lowry (2-1) earned the victory in relief of Brown, and Louis Birdt retired the last six batters to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Ricky Banuelos had a two-run triple in a three-run seventh for Pierce (7-6).

Harbor 15, Canyons 2--Robert Berana hit a solo-home run in the ninth for host Canyons (3-9-1).
