Foes of Freeway Called Obstacles

I refer to the letter by Margaret K. and William I. Kelly vehemently opposing the extension of the Long Beach Freeway (Times, Feb. 21.) After reading their letter I decided to sit down and respond while my blood is still boiling.

I bought my home in Monterey Park in 1960. I purposely bought near the Long Beach Freeway because I expected it to eventually become an integral part of the freeway system. I commuted to my office in La Canada for 20 years, all the while watching the traffic on Fremont Avenue become more and more congested and frustrating because people like the Kellys and their friends have succeeded in blocking completion of this essential freeway link.

I am sick of their “dog in the manger” attitude. They speak of alternate means of transportation, yet I doubt if ridership is any higher on the RTD buses through South Pasadena than through any other area. The people in South Pasadena have just as many cars per capita as any other part of Southern California and use them regularly on all of the freeways to get to their destinations. Perhaps if there were ways to bar them from using the other freeways, they might feel differently about the Long Beach Freeway extension.
