Miller Rides Away With Perfection in Winning American Final Event

Speedway motorcyclist Rick Miller of Reseda left little doubt who was the best rider in the Nissan American Final Saturday night, scoring a perfect 15 points before 6,712 fans.

Miller won the meeting the hard way, holding off a fast-charging Billy Hamill in his final four-lap race to win the event for the first time. Last year, Miller tied with Hamill, Shawn Moran and Greg Hancock for first place, but lost in a runoff.

A year later, Miller was the fastest of the 16-rider field, running away from the field.

Favorite Sam Ermolenko of Cypress had to be content with second place, scoring 14 points in five races. Ronnie Correy of Fullerton was third with 13 points.

The top five scoring riders advanced to the second round of world qualifiers on June 23 at Bradford, England. Kelly Moran of Huntington Beach was fourth with 11 points and the final spot was decided by a runoff between Hamill and Bobby Ott.
