Compton : Council Opposes Plan That Might End Federal Grants

Share

A proposal by President Bush that might end cities’ share of Community Development Block Grants, which funnel $2.3 million a year in federal funds to Compton, was unanimously opposed Tuesday night by the Compton City Council.

The President has proposed a $15-billion block grant that would be distributed to governors and state legislators, jeopardizing distribution to individual cities. Since 1974, the federal grants program has paid for renovation and rehabilitation of housing, for critical social services, day-care centers and meal programs for the elderly in Compton.

In other business, the Compton City Council approved spending an extra $100,000 for completion of the Gonzales Park renovation. The project is expected to be completed in six to eight weeks.
