2 Invalid Signatures Force Councilwoman From Race

A 15-year veteran on the Compton City Council has been disqualified from seeking reelection April 16 because she failed to obtain enough valid signatures on her nomination petition.

The city’s municipal code required Councilwoman Jane Robbins to collect the signatures of at least 20 registered Compton voters by last Saturday. Her petition contained 21 signatures, but City Clerk Charles Davis ruled that two of them were invalid. One person apparently was not a registered voter, and in the second case, a woman wrote her husband’s name on the petition, which is unacceptable, Davis said.

Robbins has declined to comment except to say that she has hired a lawyer. The ruling opens the way for four challengers seeking the seat.
