School District Plans 24 Layoffs

The Torrance Unified School District expects to issue layoff notices to up to 24 employees after making $2.56 million in cuts to the district’s 1991-92 budget, district officials said this week.

Notices will be sent shortly to eight nurses and one music teacher. They are certificated employees, who under state law must be notified by March 15 if they are to be laid off or demoted in the budget year beginning July 1.

In addition, the district will issue layoff notices in late May to up to 15 classified employees, who include maintenance and operations workers.

The layoffs are effective July 1. They are part of a series of budget cuts approved by the school board last week in the face of reduced state funding projections.

In all, the board abolished 70 positions. But actual layoffs are expected to be minimized because of attrition, an early retirement plan and the non-renewal of some contracts for temporary teachers, according to district officials Frank Tyrrell and John Conway.
